A Kiwi a Day Keeps the Doctor Away

 

Claims about the nutrition and health benefits of specific foods seem more and more common these days.  There is no ONE food that will do miracles for our health, but the Kiwi fruit comes close.  Kiwis are packed with nutrients known for their health benefits – Fibre, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and the minerals: potassium, manganese and magnesium. 

 

Since a typical North American diet is low in fibre, choosing a high fibre fruit like kiwi is a good start at making up for this common deficiency.

 

Vitamin C is critical for our immune and respiratory systems, especially during the winter. A study in Italy found that eating kiwi helped reduce asthma attacks in children.

 

Research has found lowered triglycerides (blood fats) among kiwi eaters. This was attributed to the unique combination of vitamins and minerals in the kiwi.

 

If you still want to cling to the “apple a day” tradition, it is worth knowing that the primary nutrients in an apple are Vitamin C and fibre. In comparison the kiwi fruit packs a much bigger nutrition punch. 

 

Based on a nutrient analysis of kiwi, it may be more worthy of the honour of  keeping the doctor away” than the apple.


As a Holistic Nutritionist I know that there is no one diet that is right for everyone.  Some people are sensitive or even allergic to kiwi fruit. Others with bowel diseases may experience irritation for the seeds in kiwis.  People with these issues should consult with a nutritionist before chowing down on kiwis.
